Excerpts from iWoz
After leaving Steve Jobs’ biography in the middle, I decided to read Wozniak’s account and thankfully completed it. The book turned out to be a great read, even though the language was a bit sloppy but it was all overshadowed by Woz’s passion for computers and electronics.
Some of the passages from the book are really inspiring, I’ve read them over and over again, and just can’t get enough. I am sharing them here for anybody who’s interested, though it’d be far better if you read the book.
I learned not to worry so much about the outcome, but to concentrate on the step I was on and to try to do it as perfectly as I could… I’d design something and then figure out a way to do it with fewer parts.
I just wanted to do cool things… I never did anything for money.
I did all my best work late at night… That’s when the phone doesn’t ring and no one bothers you.
To me, a great engineer is someone who can make a design that is simple and direct and requires the fewest components, so it’s the most efficient and elegant way to accomplish the task.
Real engineers don’t have meetings. Real engineers sit alone and build things.
My goal wasn’t to make a ton of money. It was to build good computers.
